Digital homework for high-conflict clients
Offer structured scripts that help clients pause, lower the temperature, and respond without reigniting conflict. The toolkit complements in-session work while supporting calm communication.
Between-session usage
Use these prompts as a bridge between sessions so clients practice de-escalation and nonviolent communication style in real moments.
- Draft a response, then cut everything a judge or HR officer wouldn't need to read.
- Identify the one outcome that matters most this week.
- Pause for five minutes and reread before sending.
- Ask for a time to revisit the topic when calm.
Sample de-escalation phrases
Five short scripts a client can send. Each one lowers the temperature without conceding anything or apologizing for things they didn't do.
- "I've read your message. I'll reply properly by Friday."Buys time without promising anything.
- "I'll answer the question about the schedule. I won't discuss the rest by text."Narrows the exchange to what needs an answer.
- "Let's deal with one issue at a time. The first is the payment date."Stops a pile-on of grievances.
- "I'm willing to discuss this, but not while I'm being insulted. I'll pick it up when the messages are civil."Sets a condition and a consequence, calmly.
- "Please put that request in writing so we both have the same record."Moves verbal pressure onto the record.
Where there is abuse or coercive control, de-escalation is not the goal; safety and documentation are. Don't coach a client toward reconciling with someone who is harming them, and follow your local safeguarding procedures.
Client confidentiality
Before you suggest any AI tool to a client
- Don't enter client names, case notes or identifying details yourself. Use roles ("my client", "the other parent") and change specifics that could identify anyone.
- If a client chooses to use the app with their own messages, explain that first, and record their informed consent the way your practice requires.
- Check your professional body's guidance on AI tools and client data. It takes precedence over anything on this page. Our privacy policy explains what the app stores.
